For the Boys: Ladies, explore your 50 shades of sexy by wearing the lingerie looks your guys want to see you in.

For the final entry in my Men’s Week series of posts I want to address the lucky ladies out there who have a thoughtful guy who is sweet enough to buy you intimates for the holidays. Actually, this post applies to any occasion during the year when you get lingerie as a gift from a guy. What happens when the intimates he selects are what he would like to see you slip on rather than the style you would buy for yourself? You know where I’m going with this, don’t you? You take one look at it — what little there may be to see or even hold — and think to yourself “I would NEVER wear this thing.” Clearly, your guy has an agenda and I’m here to tell you to get on that gravy train… now! There are plenty of women out there still waiting for Thanksgiving, if you know what I mean. It’s so hard to find a great guy with a sense of romance. Remember “Sex and the City?” I rest my case. Ladies, I urge you to meet him half way, put that sexy number on and be the pin-up girl of his dreams. Empower yourself by freeing yourself and celebrate how lucky you are to have a significant other who makes the effort to keep things fresh and exciting between you. It’s a gift in more than one way. I know some women find “playing sexy” an intimidating prospect. Not everyone aspires to be a Victoria’s Secret model and that’s perfectly fine. You still owe it to yourself to put forth your best effort and try a new look while remaining true to yourself. Remember, in the privacy of your home, you and he are the only ones who matter. You don’t have to wait for him to get you something “different” to push the boundaries of your lingerie wardrobe, either. This goes for the single gals out there, too! That said, I find it helpful for a woman who’s conservative to consider dipping her toe in the sea of sexy by trying new lingerie looks in degrees of daring. Given the phenomenal success of 50 Shades of Grey, I suspect that my Three Degrees of Daring is an approach whose time has come!

The First Degree: Keep it Simple.

Believe it or not, simplicity works with men. Sometimes all you need is a key new piece in your lingerie wardrobe to add a spark to your boudoir look. Black and sheer always work, of course, and I would recommend the Screen Goddess Slip from Lola Haze, which lets you be the main attraction in a revealing mesh silhouette that falls beautifully on your curves.

The Second Degree: The Little Black Set.

Speaking of black, the theory about every woman needing a little black dress in her wardrobe applies to intimates, too. Black lingerie is just sexy, period. It’s the first thing I recommend to women who may be resistant to donning a full-on corset and garters number. The Little Black Set, consisting of a basic black bra, a panty, thigh highs and a garter, works well without going too far if you’re conservative. It’s easy to put together. Every lingerie brand has a black bra and I like Addiction’s Nouvelle full-cup bra with mesh and soft microfiber paneling.

A panty with a special detail, meanwhile, brings the eye to your womanly figure and adds zing to your style. Try Leg Avenue’s sheer panty with satin rhumba ruffle back or Mimi Holliday’s Angelique Jet Bow Back Thong, which has a flattering silk satin bow in back that literally gives him something special to unwrap this holiday season!

For the legs, Philippe Matignon offers sexy Nobless 50 denier suspender belt thigh-high stockings with sheer toes. Pair them with garter belts from Mimi Holliday or Simone Perele for the perfect finishing touch.

The Third Degree: Dress it Up!

You’re ready to tap into your inner Bond Girl and strut your stuff in a dress-up look with the works: corset, garters, sheers, you name it. This isn’t about having a so-called perfect body, mind you. If you’re an extra curvy gal or a petite one with a modest bust and have the love of a good man, you are perfect in his eyes, so go for it!

This season I’m very big on the three-piece Blush set by Leg Avenue, the masters in sexy lingerie looks. It pays homage to pin-up girl style with lace and a power mesh underwire bra with retro stitching and oversized elastic straps, a girdle skirt with attached garters and matching G-string.

So the next time your guy tries to coax you into wearing lingerie that you wouldn’t choose for yourself, meet him half way. If all goes well, you won’t be wearing it for long!

Shop Like a Man: Everything a guy needs to know to buy intimate apparel for a woman.

blogcreative3A man’s first time is very important. No, I’m not talking about THAT first time, I’m referring to his first experience buying intimates for the woman in his life. This is a rite of passage that means a lot to both the man and the woman and I feel compelled to address it in MARGO’S MUST HAVES to offer my take on how a guy can get it right out of the gate. In fact, this entire week’s posts will be dedicated to looking at the lingerie-buying experience from a man’s perspective. Ladies, you might want to pass this along to your men. Guys, listen up! Over the course of the decade I operated Pink Slip in Grand Central Station, I have to say some of my favorite, most memorable interactions were with male shoppers. As a woman, I can say that there are few things that can top shopping for women’s underwear as a thoughtful, romantic gesture that reveals the level of intimacy a man has achieved with his significant other. In other words, it’s a big deal, guys! Don’t let this intimidate you, however. With a little forethought, you can get it right and she will love you for it, trust me. Preparation is the key to making the process easy on yourself. This is where a good sales associate comes in. We all know that guys are visual creatures but judging the correct sizes of your gal’s undies by comparing her to other women isn’t going to get the job done. I can’t tell you how many times men came to my store eager to buy intimates, usually as quickly as possible, only to respond to my question about the woman’s bra size by glancing at my chest and saying “she’s a little bit smaller than you.” This approach may be good for a nervous giggle, but it will only guarantee that you’ll need to make another trip to the store. I always advised my male customers to find an opportune moment to take a sneak peek in their lady’s underwear drawer to examine the tags and write down the sizes as a first step. I want to point out that I’m assuming you’re married, living together or in a long-term committed relationship, otherwise I don’t think it’s appropriate for you to do this! That said, this information will help the sales associate guide you better in your shopping experience. I suggest you put together a “Lingerie Facts List” and be ready to answer five key questions that are the sure sign of a good sales associate who knows her stuff:

  1. What is her bra size?
  2. What is her panty size?
  3. What is her dress size?
  4. Is the gift for a special occasion?
  5. What is her personal style? Casual, wholesome, sexy or glamorous?

Remember that the sales associate is there to make your experience as relaxed as possible. She may ask you to describe your significant other’s hair color to select colors that are most likely to flatter her. It’s fashion so it can be fun! The more information you share the better the service the associate can give you. I want to point out that shopping for women’s intimates doesn’t have to be just an annual event. If a woman can buy a man a six-pack of briefs why shouldn’t he shop for her basics, too? If you reach that level of intimacy in your relationship it’s a beautiful thing! With the holidays upon us, I’ve put together a few suggestions to get you started.

Love Your Legs: The Top Hosiery Trends for Fall & Holiday 2012

Coton Fore tights by Philippe Matignon

We are really excited about the resurgence in the popularity of legwear. It was all over the designer runways and you couldn’t pick up a Fall fashion issue of the women’s fashion magazines wihout seeing great hosiery looks. In InStyle alone we saw ads for the world’s top designers showing legwear as an integral part of a woman’s ensemble for Fall/Holiday. Head-to-toe black is a key trend and designers are accentuating the ladylike glamour of the look with coordinated legwear in black or gray. Gucci showed gray sheers as did Dolce & Gabbana, which made a very strong statement for legwear in a spread that showed sheers, lace knee-highs and lace ankle socks on three models looking devastatingly chic in black. Tights are very hot, too, showing up in an ad for White House/Black Market in a black chevron pattern to set off the brand’s take on the black and white trend. Cute socks, meanwhile, were showcased in ads for Bottega Veneta and Tods. Longtime Pink Slip fans know we are big supporters of legwear. It’s the best accessory to show that you are truly stylish and we carry some amazing brands that have all the top trends covered. To be on trend for Fall and through the Holiday party season, make sure to have the following items in your wardrobe.

Matte opaque tights by Commando

Gray Tights
Gray has become a staple for fall. It’s a great neutral color that can be dressed up or down depending on the desired look of an outfit. Commando, the brand known for its minimalist, ultra-comfy underwear, has a great line of opaque matte tights with multifunctional appeal. They go with everything and take you easily from day into evening when you’ve got a busy day. They also strike the perfect balance between control and comfort, providing just enough shaping without it being overbearing. With its invisible-edge waistband and dig-free fit, Commando is a go-to brand for great style and comfort.

Lily Collant by Philippe Matignon

Patterned Legwear
A great way to add dramatic impact to a chic yet minimalist ensemble is to bring attention to the legs with patterned hosiery, a category in which Philippe Mantignon, one of our newest brands, excels. Philippe Matignon creates stunning hosiery that celebrates femininity with texture and alluring style. The collection has beautiful patterns in both sheers and textured tights. The brand adds whimsy to sheers with a delicate floral pattern in its Lily Collant sheers. The Coton Fore tights in a crochet pattern are a great option for jazzing up a simple outfit or a plain dress.

Jasmine thigh high by Philippe Matignon

Thigh Highs
Philippe Matignon is a master of adding a seductive yet elegant touch to legwear that dresses up a look and has a chic thigh high in a microgeometric pattern, called Jasmine, that makes a woman feel feminine under even the most conservative of outfits. We recommend wearing it under a chic pencil skirt paired with a crisp white shirt.

Lace garter belt by Hanky Panky

Take the sexy up a notch with Hanky Panky’s Lace Garter Belt. Trust us when we say you’ll feel like a Bond girl wearing it.

Knee-Highs and Socks
Last but certainly not least is the knee-high, a silhouette that has caught on with designers for its classic school girl appeal. It may be Rachel Berry’s favorite accessory on Glee, but it’s also a sophisticated style that has a retro allure worn with dresses or skirts. Knee-highs can be functional, too, and we couldn’t resist highlighting the Two-Timin'”Hi-Knee” trouser sock from SPANX, which defies gravity to not let you down all day.

Follow our lead and we promise you’ll be walking in style every day!

Margo
