Net Gains: Mesh fabric is a hot lingerie trend that flatters you with a revealing moment.

When people think of mesh, they typically think sexy. As a design accent it has certainly been used to add an erotic charge to fashion, especially in intimate apparel. When it comes to high-end lingerie, it’s hard to name a brand that doesn’t incorporate some measure of mesh in their collections. However, mesh has benefits beyond looking provocative. A Thing for Thongs: The top five thongs that will eliminate visible panty lines and help you avoid flashing the paparazzi at a major movie premiere.

By now I’m sure you’ve heard about what happened to Anne Hathaway at the world premiere of Les Miserables in New York City last month. Anne’s stylist put together a very edgy all-black look, perhaps inspired by her recent turn as Catwoman in “Batman Rises,” which included dominatrix-style, high-heeled shoes peeking out of a sexy slit in her long dress. Unfortunately, Anne’s leg wasn’t the only thing peeking out when she made an awkward exit from a rather high SUV upon arriving to the red carpet, resulting in her flashing the V sign to a swarm of photographers. In this case, V did not stand for victory. The resulting photos traveled the world’s gossip sites in a millisecond and Anne’s PR team seemed to go into damage control as a report surfaced in The Daily News that sources “overheard” her explaining to a Vanity Fair editor that the incident was a genuine wardrobe malfunction. This may have been a way to deflect any jaded theories that the incident was an ill-conceived stunt crafted to advance Anne’s evolution from Hollywood ingénue to sexy leading lady. In this age of shock-tactics celebrity spin, anything is possible but I prefer to think that it was indeed a misguided attempt to avoid visible panty lines sabotaged by a dress that was challenging to maneuver in. Her team may not have seen it coming but boy, did the world see it going. This brings me to the subject of thongs. As a lingerie expert, I can’t hold my tongue on this one. I guess every woman has the right to go without undies occasionally but an A-list event where you will be the center of attention from the world’s photographers and entertainment media doesn’t strike me as the best time to go commando. You don’t need to be exiting an SUV or limo for this theory to apply. You can be sitting in a particularly low sofa at a party where you’ve been making eyes at a cute guy who’s returning your flirtatious glances from across the room. Suddenly you get up to give him a chance to approach you and your dress rides up, resulting in your very own Britney moment. Oops, if only you had worn a thong! I realize thongs aren’t every woman’s cup of tea but that’s why lingerie makers spent a lot of money on technology to create VPL-vanquishing seamless panties. I wrote about this topic back in November. Wild Wednesday: The iconic leopard pattern never fails to bring out the sex kitten in a woman.

           

Leopard print is a signature look of film sirens.

What is it about women and cats? Throughout history, there’s been a symbiotic relationship between us and our feline friends that continues in the present. The ancient Egyptians admired cats for their natural hunting skills and domesticated them to vanquish mice and snakes. The cat’s regal air inspired worship from cults, most notably the followers of the cat goddess Bast (also known as Bastet, according to Wikipedia). The parallels between women and cats in pop culture have often been unflattering. The legend of Bast inspired the entertainment industry, most notably in horror films such as 1942’s “Cat People” (remade in 1982 with Nastassja Kinski) where a woman was cursed to transform into a murderous panther that killed anyone who crossed her. In the 1960s, the link between felines and females came to a head with the popularity of the Catwoman character in the Batman comics and Julie Newmar’s sexy performance as the villainess in the campy TV show. Catwoman endured over the years and was portrayed as a complex antiheroine by Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway in different films with varying degrees of success. While Catwoman is usually depicted wearing a skintight catsuit, another popular take on feline style is the leopard print, which today is more than a trend, it’s a must-have look in any fashion-conscious woman’s wardrobe. Around the same time that Catwoman emerged as a subversive icon of female empowerment, Hollywood became a jungle filled with leopard-spotted starlets. Sex goddesses such as Brigitte Bardot and Jayne Mansfield showed a penchant for wearing coats, bikinis and accessories adorned in leopard print and the classic 1967 film “The Graduate” treated moviegoers to the chic vision of Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson — the original cougar (yet another feline reference) — effortlessly seducing Dustin Hoffman in her leopard coat and intimates. Media images of famous women dressed in leopard usually have an underlying  sex appeal and danger. It’s debatable whether these images are empowering or objectifying. Sexy is powerful, in my opinion. Whether leopard spots help empower a schemer like Mrs. Robinson or a playful sex kitten like Jayne Mansfield, who reportedly was far smarter than her public persona suggested, animal prints are fun and leopard is eternally chic, especially in intimate apparel. The Foundation organizes New York City’s annual Columbus Celebration and Columbus Day Parade, which has celebrated Italian-American heritage on New York’s Fifth Avenue since 1929. Shop Like a Man: Everything a guy needs to know to buy intimate apparel for a woman.

A man’s first time is very important. No, I’m not talking about THAT first time, I’m referring to his first experience buying intimates for the woman in his life. This is a rite of passage that means a lot to both the man and the woman and I feel compelled to address it in MARGO’S MUST HAVES to offer my take on how a guy can get it right out of the gate. In fact, this entire week’s posts will be dedicated to looking at the lingerie-buying experience from a man’s perspective. Ladies, you might want to pass this along to your men. Guys, listen up! Over the course of the decade I operated Pink Slip in Grand Central Station, I have to say some of my favorite, most memorable interactions were with male shoppers. As a woman, I can say that there are few things that can top shopping for women’s underwear as a thoughtful, romantic gesture that reveals the level of intimacy a man has achieved with his significant other. In other words, it’s a big deal, guys! Don’t let this intimidate you, however. With a little forethought, you can get it right and she will love you for it, trust me. Preparation is the key to making the process easy on yourself. This is where a good sales associate comes in. We all know that guys are visual creatures but judging the correct sizes of your gal’s undies by comparing her to other women isn’t going to get the job done. I can’t tell you how many times men came to my store eager to buy intimates, usually as quickly as possible, only to respond to my question about the woman’s bra size by glancing at my chest and saying “she’s a little bit smaller than you.” This approach may be good for a nervous giggle, but it will only guarantee that you’ll need to make another trip to the store. I always advised my male customers to find an opportune moment to take a sneak peek in their lady’s underwear drawer to examine the tags and write down the sizes as a first step. I want to point out that I’m assuming you’re married, living together or in a long-term committed relationship, otherwise I don’t think it’s appropriate for you to do this! That said, this information will help the sales associate guide you better in your shopping experience. I suggest you put together a “Lingerie Facts List” and be ready to answer five key questions that are the sure sign of a good sales associate who knows her stuff:

1. What is her bra size?
2. What is her panty size?
3. What is her dress size?
4. Is the gift for a special occasion?
5. What is her personal style? Casual, wholesome, sexy or glamorous?

Remember that the sales associate is there to make your experience as relaxed as possible. She may ask you to describe your significant other’s hair color to select colors that are most likely to flatter her. It’s fashion so it can be fun! The more information you share the better the service the associate can give you. I want to point out that shopping for women’s intimates doesn’t have to be just an annual event. If a woman can buy a man a six-pack of briefs why shouldn’t he shop for her basics, too? If you reach that level of intimacy in your relationship it’s a beautiful thing!
