An Evening with Oscar: Fern Mallis Interviews Oscar de la Renta at 92Y

Yesterday evening, Fashion Week coordinator Fern Mallis, sat down with designer Oscar de la Renta for an interview at 92Y’s uptown location, (and we were so excited to be in the audience!).

As soon as Oscar de la Renta stepped onto the stage, his charming accent, warm smile, and impeccable storytelling had us captivated. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, young Oscar grew up with 6 sisters. He always had real entrepreneurial drive; he said when he was younger, he planted corn and spinach in the garden to sell back to his mother. When he was seven, Oscar tried to make perfume from flowers to sell to his sisters! He described going out early in the morning to collect the dew drops that sat on the flowers, thinking that maybe this was what constituted perfume. This memory is incorporated in his first perfume bottle which has a small dewdrop on it. Living in the Dominican Republic, Oscar had access to some of the most beautifully scented flowers. A favorite, the Lady of the Night.

Oscar’s interest in art started from a young age, delving into painting and sketching. At 18, he attended art school in Spain. In Madrid, he got his first major exposure to fashion and his job at Balenciaga put him on the designing path. It was impressive to hear about how Oscar’s networking and courage led him to where he is today. During the first 24 hours that Oscar was ever in Paris, his sketches earned him a job offer at Dior. That same week, after a friend introduced him to Antonio Castillo, he was offered a position as Castillo’s assistant at Lanvin. Oscar took the Lanvin position, and has since then had the opportunity to work at Balmain. After meeting Elizabeth Arden on a one-week trip to the United States, Oscar was ready to start developing his own line.

Oscar de la Renta has been extremely successful and has had a lasting impact on fashion. His clientele include political figures, entertainers, and royalty, who are all drawn to de la Renta’s stunning evening wear and red-carpet-destined gowns (he is called , after all, the “Couture Conquistador”). Just earlier this week, Oscar was awarded the CFDA’s Founder Award.

Since we are now in an ODLR mood, we’ve taken some iconic Oscar de la Renta red-carpet looks and paired them with lingerie picks from Pink Slip! Have fun shopping the look:

This is a tribute to all the moms who took care of us when we were younger, putting us through school and helping decide our career and who we want to be as a person. Having a mother or mother figure is a necessity because there’s just nothing like motherly love. So here’s to you moms, for always being there.

Punk Slip: Going Punk for the MET Gala

Image

The excitement and glamour of a red carpet event is always heightened by the fashion of the stunning attendees, but no red carpet is more fully dedicated to fashion than that of the MET Gala. Each year, the Costume Institute and the Metropolitan Museum of Art host the gala to celebrate the opening of the Institute’s newest exhibition. This year the exhibit, “Punk: Chaos to Couture”, will run from May 9th through August 11th, with the MET Gala taking place May 6th.

Designers including Alexander McQueen, Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and Riccardo Tisci will be in-focus as displays of photographs, physical garment samples, and contemporary designer pieces attempt to tell the story of how punk has left its print on the fashion world. The Costume Institute will bring to light just how much punk’s influence has played a role in fashion’s development. Punk music and displays of visual media from the punk era will intensify this exhibit experience.

In response to the “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit, runways during New York Fashion Week’s Fall/Winter 2013 showed a renewed interest in original punk culture. Collections from Chanel, Versace, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Saint Laurent (among many others) produced looks with studded, chained, and grunged-up embellishments. The focus on punk has even recently manifested in fashion editorials: Vogue’s “Rebel Yell” and Fashion Gone Rogue’s “Punk Beauty”.

What will we see this year on the red carpet? It should be very interesting to see how guests interpret punk for this traditionally glamour-exclusive setting. One of the greatest sources of anticipation for the MET Gala’s red carpet is how the attendees will incorporate punk into their red carpet looks, just as I have done with The Pink Slip’s Lola Haze collection

Bonus! Tweet with me (@ThePinkSlipnNYC) during the event as guests reveal their wardrobe choices during the live-streaming of the red carpet.

Lola Haze’s Signature Romper:

Tap into your inner metallica. Lola knows rompers, so rock out in our most popular one! This soft nylon stretch mesh and silver mesh underlayer can be worn on its own or with your favorite jeans. The slits in center front and back of black mesh allow glimpses of silver and fully sexy you! Shop this look

Lola Haze Cross Hipster Panty

This sleek yet sexy and sophisticated hipster touched with a little shimmer. The cross detail adds mystery with the soft nylon stretch mesh and metallic waistband for the sexy punk in you. Shop this look.

Lola Haze Bomb Chemise

Crossing pretty and pink is what punk does best, and this look is the bomb. It’s bold, vibrant, and explosively sexy. The imported netting and elastic created an artful frame of your decolletage, gives light support, and shows a peak of flesh through its cutouts. Shop this look

Lola Haze Perfect Package Teddy

Feel like a punk rock goddess in this teddy, draping you in all the right places while showing just the right skin in this gold mesh front and peaks of stretch lace to tantalize, while minimizing your waist. Let’s not forget the snaps at the crotch and laced back. It’s the perfect package. Shop the look.

Sexy with the essence of the punk theme in each look, the Lola Haze collection still knows how to rock it. I hope you enjoy the Gala and these inspired styles.

A Romantic Notion: The founders of Eberjey recommend five lingerie looks that are perfect for Valentine’s Day

Eberjey founders Ali Mejia (left) and Mariela Rovito

Eberjey founders Ali Mejia (left) and Mariela Rovito

With Valentine’s Day literally around the corner, I thought I’d turn to experts in making especially romantic intimates for suggestions on pieces to wear for the big event. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Eberjey, with good reason. The talented ladies who partnered to create the brand, Ali Mejia and Mariela Rovito, meant to lavish women with ethereal lingerie creations that would express happiness, love and confidence all the things that make a woman truly beautiful. It’s feel-good fashion that starts from the heart. Ali and Mariela founded Eberjey in 1996 and I’d say they accomplished their objective big time. Season after season, they wow me with lovely pieces in soft colors, simple, elegant silhouettes and feminine details that are classic yet feel very fresh. This is why I buy them consistently and so do my customers. Having augmented ThePinkSlip.com’s Eberjey offerings with uber-cute styles from their Mila and Theodora collections, I asked the ladies to pick five pieces from our site that they thought would be perfect Valentine’s Day gifts. It was hard for them to single out just five since they love all their pieces like babies but they managed to offer up some diverse suggestions that I’m sure you’ll agree fit the Valentine’s bill perfectly.

Theodora chemise

“This is a sexy triangle-shaped chemise in the perfect combination of sweet and sexy,” says Ali. “We set the gorgeous pink glow lace against soft, muted pink jersey for a very sweet and girly effect. It makes every day feel like Valentine’s Day.” Shop the look.

Gisele robe

“I love this robe because it’s a true classic. It’s a forever piece,” says Mariela. “It’s so soft. We edged the jersey with a delicate lace to create a beautiful, classic shape. I guarantee it will become a favorite in any woman’s wardrobe.” Shop the Look.

Colette babydoll

“A babydoll is an absolute must in a woman’s lingerie wardrobe,” notes Ali. “We put our signature sweet-and-sexy stamp on this staple item. The deep V shape creates sexy cleavage and the flowy jersey fabric covers just enough. Women will want this one in every color.” Shop the Look.

Gisele sleepshirt

“I call this piece ‘Boy meets girl perfection’,” Mariela says. “It’s comfortable, cozy and sexy —- because we played with the ‘borrowed from my boyfriend’ concept when we designed it. The cut is sleek and sophisticated and the length hits just right.” Shop the Look.

Anouk underwire bra

“We designed this bra for smaller-cupped beauties,” says Ali. “It’s meant to be a great everyday lace bra. The delicate lace, vintage bow detail and light as air fit make it a favorite of mine. I just think it’s amazingly soft and feminine.” Shop the Look.

Soft and feminine just about captures the essence of Eberjey, in my opinion. My thanks to Ali and Mariela for their great advice. Remember, if you’re in love or falling in love, it’s always a sweeter experience if you’re wearing Eberjey.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Bare Essentials: The erotically-charged French brand Maison Close seduces the senses with its bold and revealing lingerie designs.

Villa Satine bodice by Maison Close - CopyI recently posted about the mesh trend in lingerie but when it comes to designing sexy intimates using sheer fabrics, Maison Close is in a class all its own. This very provocative French brand, which I just added to the assortment at ThePinkSlip.com, gives a woman passage into the forbidden world of dark and sensual erotica. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you have the best parts in Fifty Shades of Grey earmarked in hard copy or bookmarked on your Kindle, then you might want to take a peek at what Maison Close has to offer.  The line puts forth subtle hints at the pleasures of erotic games involving domination and submission. The palette of choice is black and an abundance of mesh designs celebrates a woman’s natural beauty in its nearly nude glory.   The revealing pieces hardly evoke Eve in the Garden of Eden, however. Maison Close is lingerie meant to seduce in, or at least make a woman feel seductive under her very proper, conservative day clothes. Wearing Maison Close, a woman is ready for the most private of encounters at any time of the day. Here’s a look at a few of the standout looks from the new collection that I just couldn’t resist and I predict you won’t be able to either.

It has a racerback and full bottom.

Nuit Blanche High-Waist Thong

Evoking the daring topless bathing suit of the 1960s, the Nuit Blanche high-waist thong is a sight to behold in beautiful black mesh and microfiber adorned with flat metal square studs. This design has a halter neck, bare back and thong bottom.

Heart to Heart: The mother-daughter team of Helena and Kaya Stuart keep the Only Hearts brand a successful labor of love.

Kaya and Helena Stuart

Kaya and Helena Stuart

I love Only Hearts. As a New York-based retailer, I deeply admire what founder Helena Stuart has accomplished with the innovative shop she founded more than 30 years ago, growing the Only Hearts brand into a unique lifestyle statement. That’s why I just added a range of wonderful pieces from the 2013 collection to the brand assortment available at ThePinkSlip.com. Only Hearts, which Helena describes as inner-outerwear™, is a full range of classifications including intimates, sleepwear, dresses and more, all proudly made in New York City’s garment district. The line is fabulously girly with clean lines, soft colors and cozy fabrics figuring prominently throughout. The girly energy doubled 11 years ago when Helena’s talented daughter Kaya joined the firm and the company officially became a family affair. I recently chatted with Helena about her inspirations, the evolution of the intimates market and the joys of working with family.

Margo Andros: Helena, what inspires your approach to designs?

Helena Stuart: I think most designers would agree to having an inner drive to see the world in their own way. This is the core of what motivates me; I just start from the inside out.

Margo: How have you seen the intimates market change over the years since you founded Only Hearts?

Helena: When I trademarked inner-outerwear in 1980 there was no contemporary lingerie market. A camisole was strictly an underpinning, not to be worn on its own as a top. So things have changed a lot! It’s been wonderful to be a part of this evolution, to see a full circle acceptance and appreciation of showing a little bit of what’s underneath.

Margo: How has the Only Hearts brand evolved over time?

Helena: It’s hard to summarize, briefly, almost 34 years in business, especially manufacturing in New York City’s Garment District! When I started, I was using only black and white, mostly cotton. Currently we use a rainbow’s range of colors, textures, and fabrics from all over the world. Also, the original Only Hearts customer was in her twenties, my age when I founded the business. Over the years we’ve grown together, and her daughter is now another core part of our customer base.

Margo: What key trends is Only Hearts offering for 2013?

Helena: Only Hearts is not really a ‘trendy’ brand. We’re doing a lot of color blocking and patchwork ideas, which haven’t looked fresh to me in a while. Also, a big interest in burlesque / erotica inspired lingerie.

Margo: What’s it like to collaborate with your daughter Kaya?

Helena: It’s a gift!  I consider myself to be very lucky not only to see her most days, but to get to know her as a creative thinker and problem solver outside the roles within our (large, traditional, ITALIAN) family.

Margo: You’re indeed very lucky to have her. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with my followers, Helena.

Helena: You’re welcome. It was a pleasure!

Now that we know the inspiration, here’s a look at some of my faves from the Only Hearts assortment at ThePinkSlip.com.

Net Gains: Mesh fabric is a hot lingerie trend that flatters you with a revealing moment.

Lola Haze Signature Camisole - CopyWhen people think of mesh, they typically think sexy. As a design accent it has certainly been used to add an erotic charge to fashion, especially in intimate apparel. When it comes to high-end lingerie, it’s hard to name a brand that doesn’t incorporate some measure of mesh in their collections. However, mesh has benefits beyond looking provocative. It’s a very comfortable fabric to wear in panties since it’s breathable and lightweight. Still, there’s no denying the visual appeal of mesh. Its earliest applications date back to the 1700s when the French started making a hexagonal fabric in the city of Tulle, giving birth to tulle fabric, which was first linked to wedding dresses in 1840 when it was featured in Queen Victoria’s bridal gown. Nylon mesh, which has a functional benefit used in sports apparel, was invented by a director who worked for DuPont and was patented in 1935. Nearly 80 years later, mesh remains a popular trend for lingerie brands using it creatively in all categories of intimates. Here are some of my favorites that we offer on ThePinkSlip.com.

Catherine Teddy by Arianne

Light, sheer, stretch mesh fabric gently hugs your curves in the Catherine Teddy with intricate scalloped eyelet lace trim. Underwire cups offer support and shape, and are trimmed with same scalloped lace. Narrow shoulder straps adjust in back. Thong styling offers minimal coverage in rear.
